“But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33

Dear Friends,

At our Pentecost services held on May 11, the Worship Committee had us try an unusual exercise. As part of our celebration of God’s Spirit in our midst, we were invited to write on an index card a personal commitment to help people “on the margins” (to practice social justice and love). Participants then came forward, placed the index card in a basket, tied a red ribbon (symbolizing the fire of Pentecost) on a tree, and then picked up a red stone as a reminder of their promise. Attached, you’ll see some of the commitments that were made that day. It was a wonderful time.

On May 18, we held a congregational meeting regarding the John and Kathryn Murray Christian Life Center . There was a report from the CLC Committee and our architect. Then folks asked questions and made comments. Where are we now? As you recall, the project itself was approved unanimously by the congregation last spring. So the next step is to figure out how to secure the remainder of the funding needed. We covet your prayers and support as we move into the next stages. If you would like to participate as a member of the CLC, please let me know. We would love to have your input.

This summer there are a number of special opportunities for Christian growth here. I’ll mention just a few.

June 22-28 our youth and youth leaders will travel to Washington , D.C. to do mission work with the hungry and homeless there. On June 29, the youth will lead worship and report on the ministry they’ve performed.

Sundays July 6, 13, 27, and August 3, I’ll lead an adult Sunday School class at 9:45 a.m. in the parlor. We’ll discuss Transforming Congregational Culture by Anthony B. Robinson. This is an excellent resource for thinking about how to transform the church to be vibrant in the 21st century. If you’d like to participate, please call the church office by June 20, so that we can order a book for you.

I’m also forming an Evangelism Team (an “E-Team”) to help improve our church’s outreach and hospitality. We’ll do some reading and discussion this summer, and lay out some clear steps for the future. We will not meet on a regular basis—only as needed. Please let me know if you’d like to join us. It should be a joyful and useful group.

I hope you have a blessed and faithful summer as you continue your spiritual practices and grow as a Christian.

       Peace be with you,

                                 Jeff
