First
Presbyterian Willoughby Mission Support
|
First Presbyterian Church of Willoughby
supports global, national, regional, and local mission. In Luke 3:10,
Jesus taught us that he who has two coats, let him share with him who has
none; and he who has food, let him do likewise. We strive to be a rainbow
of hope to those in need by sharing the abundance in our lives. Below are
a few of the organizations whom we support.

Thank you to the 38
people who helped with and came to the Sloppy Joe Luncheon on May 4th to
hear about Habitat for Humanity opportunities from Rita Ciophani. Several
people have made plans to get involved independently during the month of
May, and our committee is meeting May 21st to strategize how we
can best focus our church’s commitment to this wonderful organization by
this summer. Over $260 has been
raised through Habitat Hammer Campaign, Lunch, and Bake Sales.
Cheryl Brickman
reported that over $1050.00 was raised by the 16 walkers on the May 11th
Walk for Hunger. We had a beautiful day for walking 5K around
Cleveland
. Thanks to all of our
supporters. Watch for photos to
be posted on the Church and Society Bulletin Board.
We continue our
Partnership with
North
Church
and several people are signed up to help on their Work Day, May 17th.
We have also emptied the basket of donated toiletries three times to
give to the homeless who attend the free after-church lunch program and
their end-of-the-month dinners. Our
actual partnership months are August and December.
Watch for sign-up sheets soon for opportunities to help in August.
The next Church
& Society Committee Meeting will be on June 11th at 7:00 pm.
Please let anyone on the
Church and Society Committee hear from you if you have special interests,
skills or ideas that will help us as we work on our annual plans.
This year’s C & S Committee includes: Cyndi Oviatt, Diane Jameson,
Cheryl Brickman, Susan Hamilton, Suzanne Adams, Nancy Johnson, and Karen
Kennedy.

COLUMBARIUM
The
Columbarium Committee has set up a standing committee which will consist of
three Columbarium members, Rev. Paschal, a member of the Building and
Grounds Committee, and a representative from the congregation.
The three Columbarium members on the committee are Jeff Oviatt, Jack
Turben and Nelson Freeland. These
members will serve for various terms and other members will replace them at
intervals. Any Columbarium
member or our Church Office Manager will be glad to answer any questions you
may have regarding the Columbarium, or refer you to the person with
particular information. There is
a brochure available with a good outline of how to get started on becoming a
member.

The
Church & Society committee wishes to thank all of the walkers and
contributors to
this year's 5K walk. Every $1 dollar raised went to feed a family of
four.
On
Saturday,
May 10th we participated in this year's Plain Dealer Walk for Hunger, the largest local
charity walk in Cuyahoga County! This annual 5-K walk through Downtown
Cleveland benefited the 36 hunger centers and 18 hot meal sites of the Hunger
Network of Greater Cleveland. The funds raised provide more than 500,000
nutritious emergency meals for Cuyahoga County children and others who must
depend on emergency food to survive. Throughout the summer children are at a
great risk of going hungry every single day because they cannot use school
lunches, often their only meal, as a resource for food.
This
year's event started with a Kick-off Rally at Burke Lakefront airport from 9:30
am - 10:00 am. Warm up with Jazzercize got us inspired to walk. The Walk for Hunger
took place from 10 - 11 am! The sights included: The Rock &
Roll Hall of Fame, Great Lakes Science Center, Cleveland Browns Stadium, Public
Square, The Quicken Loans Arena, the Historic Warehouse District, Gateway, and
Playhouse Square, then across the finish line at North Coast Harbor (Voinovich Park).
A special Kids' Fun Tent was set up where kids made Mother's Day cards and the
event was capped off with an enjoyable free lunch.
If
you missed this event for 2008, don't miss it for 2009. Besides addressing a
major mission need, it is great fun for all.

WELCOME to HABI-NEWS,
a monthly (pretty much) e-update of Habitat for Humanity of Geauga
County. This past week, we have
been once again been given an opportunity to wake from our slumber. And
once again, I am reminded that there are a lot of people who are not
sleeping. I have received several calls from volunteers regarding
Habitat's (both local and national) intentions to help our neighbors. Bill O'Donnell, who
serves our affiliate as Chair of the Construction
Committee, Board member and hammer-swinger on the Wednesday Work Crew
has offered to organize people. If anyone is
interested in joining these efforts, you may call our office 440-564-5848. In addition, there is a format on Habitat
International's Website to sign up to donate or lend a hand. (Check
our website at www.habitat.org )
Our affiliate has handed the keys over to three families already this year,
and we look forward to presenting the other families with theirs before too long.
Please look for the date and time of our next home dedication in this e-news
within the next couple of months.
Please add Habitat to your prayer lists. Our affiliate is constantly
striving to be the best stewards of the resources we have been entrusted
with. As the costs of land, building materials and now gasoline continue to skyrocket, your prayers for our leaders and decision makers are
especially crucial. In fact, if there is a group who would like to
meet monthly for prayer for our affiliate: its families and supporters,
please contact the office;
There are still families on our waiting list. Most of them have
already completed their one hundred hours (sweat equity down payment) to
qualify for a Habitat home. CAN YOU HELP? Please call our office
if your place of business, faith community or civic organization would
appreciate a speaker.
Through your prayers, donations of time, money, land and concern for others,
together we will build better futures for families in need.

Please make sure you pick up your copy of the new Heifer Project Catalog.
Copies are available in the narthex or in the church office.
Since 1944, Heifer has helped more than 7 million families in more than 125 countries improve their quality of life.
Heifer International and friends like you have been proving that there's no
better way to help a family escape poverty and hunger than by providing them
with sustainable means of supporting themselves. What started with heifers has
progressed to Chinese silkworms and Nepalese water buffalo. Heifer has learned
that resources both small and large can help families lift themselves our of
poverty to health and hope. If you have a friend or family member who shares
your concern about the less fortunate among us, or a co-worker who is especially
fond of a certain animal like cows, pigs or ducks ... then please mention this
opportunity to them, and get them their own Heifer International Catalog.
The most important gift catalog in the world!

Thanks
to all the volunteers that continue to give their precious time to help with our
North Church mission.
Although
we have a particular month every year designated as our special "Partnership" month with North
Church, this is really an ongoing mission. We have a great opportunity to serve others and make a difference in the lives of the congregation at North Presbyterian Church.
We continue to be committed to help in their mission to fix, serve, and clean up after the meal served each Sunday after
their church service. If you would like to volunteer some of your time to
help, please contact any member of our Church and Society board or call Beth Falkner-Brown at 946-4558 with any questions.
Thank you for your interest and helping to meet a need.

Make a difference in the life of a child...
Become a Big Brother or Big Sister.
Many children in this area are waiting to be matched with a positive adult
role model. "Bigs" spend just a few hours per week with their
"Littles" doing things they both enjoy - playing catch, baking
cookies, or just being together. Just remember, you don't have to
change your life to change the life of a child. We are in great need of
volunteers who would like to be a friend and mentor to a child.
Big Brothers Big Sisters offers a variety of
volunteer options so please give us a call at 440.352.2526 or 1.800.222.2440
to find out which opportunity is right for you!
Thank you for your interest and helping to meet a need.

One of the primary missions of the Presbyterian Women is Blanket/Tools of Hope. This mission project is sponsored by
the Church World Service. Over the last year earthquakes, tidal waves, and hurricanes left a trail of destruction and grief in Pakistan, the Indian Ocean region, and our own Gulf Coast states. In each instance, thanks to your past generous support, Church World Service was able to respond promptly and effectively with emergency supplies of blankets, food and shelter supplies.
Thanks
to everyone who have shared generous gifts providing a rainbow of caring to those in need in some 80 countries.
Please continue to support this very important
ongoing mission project.

6th Annual
Charity Auction
Thank
You, Thank You !!
Thanks
to you, once again our Annual
Charity Auction was a great success. 100% of the proceeds
will go to benefit the Heifer project and the Willoughby Food
Pantry (50% to Heifer International and 50% to the Willoughby Food Pantry).
The
lunch was great and the auction was a lot of fun. We raised over $4,000.00
to help a number of very needy people both here and abroad.
Thanks
again.
This
event was a lot of
fun and the auction included many great
items and services, that were generously donated. If you missed out on the action, don't miss out again.

PEDAL
TO THE POINT
Dear fellow church
members,
Greetings!
I am writing this letter to ask for your help with a fundraising
effort I have been involved with for the past ten years.
I am talking about the MS 150 PEDAL
TO THE POINT. This is a bike
tour sponsored by the local chapter of the NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
SOCIETY. The tour is scheduled
for August 16th and 17th. Along
with other members of my team, Chariots of Fire, I will be pedaling my bike
from Cuyahoga County
fairgrounds to Sandusky High School 75 miles.
I will spend the night and bike back the next day for a total of 150
miles. Last year I raised $1,681
and our team of 23 members raised over $25,000.
I am looking to the members of our church family to give a
donation/sponsorship for this worthwhile event.
My fundraising goal this year is $1,800.
I hope I can count on your continued support and generosity so that I
may make my goal. Last year
members of our church family donated $475.
This will be my 11th year doing the tour.
Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic disease of the central nervous system.
Resulting symptoms may include impaired vision, severe fatigue, loss
of balance and coordination, slurred speech, tremors, muscle weakness, and
in the most sever cases paralysis. Symptoms
usually being between the ages of 15 and 50.
A cure for MS is currently being researched.
MS affects an estimated 350,000 people.
The
Northeast Ohio
chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society provides services to more
than 15,000 local people in a 5-county area.
Perhaps you know some of them. 60%
of funds raised at the local level stay at the local level, and 40% go to
the national office to aid in research.
Only about 19 cents of every dollar goes to administrative fees.
If you are interested in sponsoring me, fill out the bottom portion of
this sheet and mail it with your tax deductible donation to my home or give
it to me at church. My address
is:
1931 Frances Dr., Wickliffe, OH 44092. Checks should be made
out to: The National Multiple
Sclerosis Society. Your name
will be added to my master sponsor sheet.
Any donation amount would be greatly appreciated. If
you have any questions or would like to join my team and ride, feel free to
contact me at 440-943-6490. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Sincerely,
Carl
